You probably remember Rodney King. All he wanted was for all of us to get along. To peacefully coexist. And really, that’s what we are asking for with the latest versions of IBM’s WebSphere MQ… to all get along, to coexist with previous versions.
Unfortunately, it’s kind of a case of, you can’t get there from here.
With previous version of WebSphere MQ, in order to upgrade one queue manager on a server, you had to upgrade all queue managers, whether you wanted to or not.
With the two new releases of WebSphere MQ, 7.1 and 7.5, you can now coexist with versions 7.1.0.6 and higher. But, even with this configuration, there are a few hoops you have to jump through to get them all to “get along,” but it is a step in the right direction. In fact, once you have just 7.1 or 7.5 in place, the road ahead is clear.
Rather than having two new releases in close proximity, it may have been easier on everyone for IBM to wait and deliver all the updates in just one release, but that would have meant waiting longer for the release. So, for awhile, we will still be saying 7.1 and 7.5 (especially since there isn’t a 7.5 for Z systems). For most of us it will be easier to upgrade to 7.5. Since, really, 7.5 is just 7.1 repackaged with the addition of some related features.
The world doesn’t always turn the way we want it to.
